It is never too early to start preparing your garden beds. Taking simple, common sense approaches now will save you a lot of time and energy regardless if winter does re-appear. After a long winter, conditioning your beds will improve your gardens performance and promote healthy vigorous growth. Your goal is to loosen the earth and replenish vital minerals and nutrients. To begin, simply remove the packed mulch, dead weeds, old leaves, grass, and sticks around your shrubs and perennial sprouts. Take all this debris, yard waste, and start your own compost pile. With a rake or a cultivator loosen the soil by scratching the surface. Add a thin layer of an enriching compost, and an organic fertilizer. Turn it thoroughly into the soil, put down a weed control fabric where you won't be planting then cover with about two, to four inches of the mulch of your choice. The mulch in your garden acts as a cover for your beds; suppressing weeds, holding moisture, and keeping the soil warm, while protecting them from harsh weather.
