Mother Earth has been biologically recycling materials since the dawn of time. Composting vegetation that falls to the ground, animal manure, and animal decay.
Compost is Organic Gold for your lawn, and gardens. It adds vital organic matter, nutrients and biological life to the soil. It lessens the need for watering by increasing the soil's water holding capacity, while increasing the plants disease fighting capabilities. Organic Compost, whether you create your own Compost or you buy it, will allow your garden to flourish with an abundance of healthy fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
As soon as the weather breaks, and the soil is workable, is an excellent time to apply organic compost to your garden, and will allow the compost time to stabilize in the soil. To top dress your lawn use 1/4" to 1/2" of compost.
You can create your own compost pile, or Wolf Hill can deliver a truckload of organic compost to your property. Don't need a truckload? We carry bags of Coast of Maine Organic Compost and peat, which can be loaded into your vehicle for you by one of our employees. We purchase our Compost from Agresource Inc
CREATE YOUR OWN COMPOST PILE
Making your own Compost pile,will save on the environment by reducing waste being dumped in your local landfills, create healthy plants, and gets the whole family involved for 'Green Living'. It's easy and fun!
A family that gardens together stays together!
STEP ONE: Select an area in your yard, or garden where you would like to create your compost pile. Do not create the pile against your house, or shed. The critters that help decompose your pile will venture off into your home or shed. Don't forget to get the kids involved. They can help select and area for the compost or maybe create their own compost pile that they are responsible for.
You don't need a bin to create your compost pile - but to isolate your pile you can use chicken wire to make a round or square area for dumping your material. An area approximately 4 feet wide by 8 feet long by 4 feet high is recommended. This will allow for easy access to turn your compost. To keep your compost more contained and looking neater Wolf Hill carries, Achla Designs Spinning Composter, made from recycled plastic. This composter is rodent proof and features an easy access sliding door, and mixing fins to help break up clumps. Achla Designs Pyramid Composter, made from recycled plastic. It features an exclusive peaked lid that lets in just enough rainwater to keep compost moist and lets the rest run off. Side vents ensure good air circulation, and a large front door gives easy access to finished compost.
The four main ingredients for a compost pile is;
1) Carbon - from yard debris
2) Nitrogen - from food, manure, green grass
3) Water
4) Air
STEP TWO: Start your compost pile by adding debris from your yard. Grass clippings are high in nitrogen and debris from trees and dried leaves, are high in carbon. Don't throw away kitchen scrap, of veggies, fruits, coffee grinds, etc. These items add rich nitrogen to your compost pile. When these items are added to the pile, cover with grass clippings or yard debris, to help with odor and four legged critters. To help jump start your compost pile add a shovel full of manure. This will get the microbes started that is responsible for breaking down organic matter. Wolf Hill carries organic products to help your compost pile decompose. Organic microbes benefit your compost pile without the sweet smell of manure.
STEP THREE: Moisture. Your compost pile should have the moisture consistency like a rung out sponge for fast decomposing. Too much moisture or too little moisture will slow down the decomposing process, and too much water will cause a smelly odor.
STEP FOUR: Turn your compost pile on a weekly basis. Bringing the center out and the sides in. This helps irrigate your pile allowing for even air flow and eliminates compacting.
STEP FIVE: It will take approximately two months, for the finished product, from start to finish. By having the right mixture of all 4 elements, Carbon, Nitrogen, Water, and Air, your compost should look dark brown, smell like the earth, and be rich with nutrients.
